Abstract

Herein, we report on a method to engineer a conductive interface to promote high Na<superscript>+</superscript> ionic conductivity in NaBH<subscript>4</subscript>. By controlled reaction with B<subscript>2</subscript>H<subscript>6</subscript>, the ionic conductivity of NaBH<subscript>4</subscript> is enhanced by 5 orders of magnitude at room temperature. The origin of the enhanced conductivity is believed to be the result of the formation of a Na<subscript>2</subscript>B<subscript>12</subscript>H<subscript>12</subscript> layer on the surface of α-NaBH<subscript>4</subscript> particles. The resultant NaBH<subscript>4</subscript>@Na<subscript>2</subscript>B<subscript>12</subscript>H<subscript>12</subscript> heterostructure exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 10<superscript>–4</superscript> S cm<superscript>–1</superscript> at 115 °C superior to that of pristine NaBH<subscript>4</subscript> and shows the potential to act as a solid-state electrolyte for all Na solid-state batteries.
