Abstract

If patients experience equivalent outcomes with and without postoperative antibiotics, then reducing routine use could positively impact antibiotic-resistance trends and healthcare costs, while avoiding the systemic side-effects of antibiotics. There was also no significant difference in postoperative sinus infection rate between the antibiotic and placebo groups, although the rate of diarrhea was significantly higher in the antibiotic group, at 24.3% compared to 2.5% in the placebo group ( I P i = .02).
