Abstract

Since vowel production is more gradient than consonant production, we divided the 129 non-English vowel productions into near misses, such as raising or lowering of an English vowel, and far off productions, such as front rounded vowels. It occupies a space between Finnish /æ, e, ø/, and errors from both groups saw participants fronting, raising, or lowering this English vowel in the absence of one clear Finnish vowel on which to map this phonetic category. Vowel errors and consonant errors were subcategorized according to classes of vowels and consonants as described in section 2.4. However, despite this shortcoming, our study contributes valuable insight into segmental aspects of Finnish-accented English, as it is the first study to relate segmental errors to foreign accent for L1 Finnish speakers of English.
