Abstract

The genesis of America: US foreign policy and the formation of national identity, 1793-1815: by Jasper Trautsch, New York, Cambridge University Press, 2018, xiv + 314 pp., £22.99 (hardcover), ISBN 978 1 1084 282 48 In this review, I will focus most of my attention on Trautsch's contributions to scholarship about American nationalism, while also bringing attention to how its arguments offer insight into early American foreign policy. Trautsch blends three themes to structure his account of the origins of American nationalism: foreign policy debates; partisanship; and ideology. Jasper Trautsch's examination of the crucial role played by foreign policy in the creation of American national identity during the founding decades of the United States is a masterwork of historical analysis.
