Abstract

The paper is dedicated to an extraordinary personality of Slovak history in the struggle for national emancipation - to dr. Ján Lajčiak. His moral strength of theologian, philosopher, and thinker lies primarily in the Christian conviction on the power of spirituality carried by culture. The 100th anniversary of the publication of his original work Slovakia and Culture (1921) is an opportunity to celebrate its significance, which testifies the theoretical maturity of dr. Lajčiak's realistic and critic approach to contemporary social events in Slovakia. Through systematic analysis of Slovak conditions and cultural life as a crucial component of the formation of national consciousness, he contributed to its humanitarian reflection and significantly entered the conscience of the nation in an effort to support its spiritual and moral uplift. His European insight and Slovak convictions and Slovak beliefs have contributed to the mediation and evaluation of historical contexts not only in national but also in wider Hungarian or European contexts and they appear to be of particular benefit.
