Abstract

It provides a review of the scattered literature describing the role and evolution of discourse markers (henceforth DMs) in several languages, as well as a clear synthesis of the most recent developments in the theories of language change. It also presents the several hypotheses that have been investigated to account for their rise, and finally examines the problematic specificities regarding the emergence and evolution of discourse markers which are hard to reconcile with an all-grammaticalization hypothesis. Discourse markers: Description and theory, 147-170. Anticipating predictability: An ERP investigation of expectation-managing discourse markers in dialogue comprehension.
