Abstract
- Kinetics of Ru(III) catalysed oxidation of butane 1,3 diol by potassium bromate in perchloric acid have been studied and mercuric acetate has been used as bromide ion scavenger. The results indicate zero order dependence on potassium bromate and hydrogen ions while first order kinetics with respect to butane 1,3 diol and Ru(III) is observed. Successive addition of either of mercuric acetate or potassium chloride does not bring about significant change in the rate of reactions. Negligible effect of ionic strength on the rate of reaction was observed. The mechanistic steps in conformity with kinetic results have been suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
