Abstract

This study examines the monomodal and multimodal metaphors and metonymies employed in 25 proopposition cartoons depicting the Syrian conflict by the Jordanian cartoonist Emad Hajjaj. These cartoons were sketched and published between 2011 and 2018. The method adopted for the analysis is based on the framework presented by Bounegru and Forceville (2011) on verbal-pictorial metaphors. Data analysis reveals the use of many source domains that depict different aspects of the Syrian conflict. It also reveals multimodality as the pervasive type of the rendered metaphors. The researchers attribute multimodality to the different relations that the analysis established between words and images. In addition, data analysis indicates that the cartoonist not only comments through his cartoons, but also evaluates, criticizes, and condemns. The study concludes with recommendations for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
