Abstract

Yet, while much has been written about sustainable development in its various dimensions, research on the connection between data availability and the achievement of sustainability goals in Asia is surprisingly sparse. The emergence of the new landscape of data means that the future of sustainable development research in regional science is bright. Regional science, by its very nature, addresses the geographic dimensions of social, economic, and environmental challenges to humankind (Stimson, 2016). Mendez and Santos-Marquez employ a novel luminosity-based measure of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita from satellite nighttime light data to examine regional convergence and spatial dependence across subnational regions of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
