Abstract

There are three Turritopsis species in Japanese waters: Turritopsis pacifica is distributed in the north of the Kanto region, Turritopsis sp.2 is distributed in the south of the Kanto region, except for in Okinawa Prefecture, and Turritopsis dohrnii is distributed in Okinawa Prefecture. In this study, molecular phylogenetic analysis was performed using medusae of Turritopsis spp. collected from Wakayama and Okinawa prefectures and a juvenile medusa liberated from a floating polyp colony of Turritopsis sp. collected from Wakayama Prefecture. All samples can be identified as T. dohrnii, which has not been previously reported and is new to Wakayama. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
