Abstract

This article focuses on the book "The Empty Core: An Object Relations Approach to Psychotherapy of the Schizoid Personality," by Jeffrey Seinfeld. British Object Relations theory is the branch most relevant to the subject of this review. In this theory, a very early developmental phase, which Klein called the "paranoid-schizoid position," is considered a key element in pre-oedipal disorders. If the infant doesn't move through this position successfully, he or she will remain in a schizoid state. The theory holds that treatment of pre-oedipal disorders that does not address the schizoid position will achieve limited success at best.
