In the 1990s a research team of Polska Bibliografia Literacka [Polish Literary Bibliography] registered samizdat print material from the era 1976-1989. Kandziora, who was part of the team, now reflects on the new insights afforded by the project. The bibliographers demonstrated how samizdat printing evolved into a mature publishing market. He outlines the styles associated with different journals and generations contesting the system and proposes an appropriate periodisation. Kandziora also questions the image of underground publishing as a hermetic system and proposes to describe it both as a sphere of literary values and of works that transgress the division between official and underground publishing, but also as a space in which new, liminal genre forms emerged, destabilising the boundaries of traditional literariness.
