Abstract

Focuses on the progressive voters, who have occupied an anomalous position in American politics in recent times with mention to the 1928 Presidential election. Information on the history of progressivism and third party; View that as contrasted with capitalism on the one hand and with Socialism or communism on the other, progressives are not obliged to identify the welfare of their ideal with the fortunes of one political party; View that both candidates, Al Smith and Herbert Hoover are unprogressive in their political concepts and bring with them the promise of movement which may make for social progress; Report that a progressive's eventual choice should depend in part upon the personal programs of the two candidates and in part upon the risks which they are willing to take in order to give effect to their party leadership; View that the future of progressivism as a formative influence in the life of the country depends less upon the successful capture of political power than upon the energy devoted to the improvement of existing economic and social processes.
