Abstract

The combination of a boron Lewis acid and a decamethylsamarocene, specifically 9,10-Me<subscript>2</subscript>-9,10-diboraanthracene with (C<subscript>5</subscript>Me<subscript>5</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>Sm<superscript>II</superscript>(THF)<subscript>2</subscript>, in toluene leads to cooperative reductive capture of N<subscript>2</subscript>. The product crystallizes as the salt, [(C<subscript>5</subscript>Me<subscript>5</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>Sm<superscript>III</superscript>(THF)<subscript>2</subscript>][(C<subscript>5</subscript>Me<subscript>5</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>Sm<superscript>III</superscript>(η<superscript>2</superscript>-N<subscript>2</subscript>B<subscript>2</subscript>C<subscript>14</subscript>H<subscript>14</subscript>)], 1, which formally is comprised of an (N=N)<superscript>2−</superscript> moiety sandwiched between a [(C<subscript>5</subscript>Me<subscript>5</subscript>)<subscript>2</subscript>Sm<superscript>III</superscript>]<superscript>1+</superscript> metallocene cation and the diboraanthracene ditopic Lewis acid.
