Abstract
- Harmonic filters and reactive power compensation systems must be designed to comply with the grid code. Generally, filters are designed to meet the harmonic requirement, while flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) are designed to meet the reactive power requirement. Thus, a number of studies have considered the design of these two devices individually. However, the interference between the designs of harmonic filters and FACTS capacity must be considered adequately to prevent specification changes later on in the development stage. In this paper, an assessment process for a wind farm to calculate the reactive power capacity of static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) and static var compensator (SVC) to meet multiple grid code requirements is described. Harmonic requirement, reactive power requirement and voltage regulation at the point of common coupling are considered. Also, voltage regulation for the protection of the power conditioning system (PCS) is taken into account, to set the reactive power limit of each generator. The process is determined from the causality of each parameter, depending on the control principles of the FACTS device. The developed procedure is verified for a model wind farm of 32 wind turbine generators. Results of the FACTS capacity and filter parameters are shown, validating the effectiveness of the proposed procedure in meeting multiple requirements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
