Abstract

This article presents information about Zoogoneticus tequila, one of the threatened fishes of the world. Its common name is Picote de Tequila. Adult male size is 28.2 to 10mm SL with cream-colored terminal bands in the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins of adult males. It is distinguished from its only congeneric species, Zoogoneticus quitzeoensis, by a prominent subterminal crescent-shaped orange-yellow band in the caudal fin of males. The species is matrotrophic; embryos develop in the cavity of the single, median ovary. It faces several threats which includes habitat fragmentation, introduction of exotics and intensive collection by specialized aquarium hobbyists and academics.
