Abstract

A molybdenum disulfide/graphene (MoS<subscript>2</subscript>/G) interlayer was prepared by a simple coating method. In the interlayer, the edge of MoS<subscript>2</subscript> has insufficient molybdenum–sulfur bonding coordination and has adjustable active sites. These sites can effectively limit the transfer of polysulfides by chemisorption. Meanwhile, graphene has excellent electrical conductivity and extremely large specific surface area making it a promising candidate for modifying electrodes in lithium–sulfur battery. The MoS<subscript>2</subscript>/G composite is used as an interlayer for a carbon nanotubes/sulfur (CNTs/S) cathode. A lithium–sulfur battery fabricated from MoS<subscript>2</subscript>/G interlayer delivers a high discharge capacity of 1537.2 mAh g<superscript>−1</superscript> at 0.1 C. In addition, the discharge of the carbon nanotubes/sulfur@MoS<subscript>2</subscript>/G (CNTs/S@MoS<subscript>2</subscript>/G) can also remain 984.9 mAh g<superscript>−1</superscript> after 450 cycles with a lower capacity decay of 0.061% per cycle at 0.5 C, exhibiting a fantastic rate performance. The CNTs/S@MoS<subscript>2</subscript>/G cathode shows excellent electrochemical performance, which provides a promising strategy for the developing of highly stable and commercial lithium–sulfur batteries.
