RESULTS FROM THE 2003 AUSCAN CRUISE OFFSHORE KANGAROO ISLAND AND THE VERACITY OF THE RECORDS OF TWO DEEP-SEA CORES OBTAINED DURING THE CRUISE, WITH A DISCUSSION ON THE HOLOCENE HISTORY OF THE RIVER MURRAY ESTUARY.

A brief account of the achievements of the AUSCAN cruise is presented together with an extensive list of published papers resulting from this cruise. Many of these papers provide considerable detail about the link between marine and continental records, many of which span the entire last glacial cycle (MIS 5e - MIS 1). The second part of the paper argues that a large estuary to the north of the River Murray mouth during the early Holocene, postulated by Helfensdorfer et al. (2019, 2020) requires scrutiny because their postulated sealevel reconstruction is flawed. In addition, the extensive deposition of sediments dammed near the mouth of the River Murray thought by these authors to have prevented the dispersal of fluvial sediments to the continental shelf and slope is unfounded.
