Abstract

In the article, the authors discuss issues on nonhuman primate hunting in early to mid-Holocene East Java, particularly the ideological importance of the langurs (Trachypithecus auratus) and macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Other topics include the evidence in Homo sapiens burial offerings showing the ideological value of langurs over macques, and the targeting of langurs over macaques as subsistence strategy.
