- Endpoint consumers - home cooks and restaurant lovers - are directly responsible for just 1 percent of the total impact of food waste, with 80 percent of all emissions from food waste occurring on farms. A Bon Appétit Guide Humans throw away about 1.3 billion tons of food a year, or - at the very least - one third of all food in the world.
