Abstract

Firstly, the Luxembourgish school system offers its students mostly French, German and English as the languages to be acquired in education. Introduction This paper looks at foreign language provision at secondary level in the educational system of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, one of the smallest European Union (EU) member-states. In Luxembourg, the 1984 language law officially recognizes three languages: Luxembourgish as the national language, and French and German as legislative and/or administrative languages. Otherwise Portuguese and Italian do not play a role in the Luxembourgish school system, except for upper secondary school students specializing in languages and literatures, who can choose Spanish, Italian or Portuguese as their quatrième language vivante (fourth modern language).
