Abstract
- New methylviologen (MV<superscript>2+</superscript>) bromobismuthate [MV]<subscript>3</subscript>[BiBr<subscript>6</subscript>]<subscript>2</subscript> · 2H<subscript>2</subscript>O (I) isostructural to the well-known chlorobismuthate [MV]<subscript>3</subscript>[BiCl<subscript>6</subscript>]<subscript>2</subscript> · 2H<subscript>2</subscript>O has been prepared from an aqueous solution and cha-racterized by X-ray diffraction. The reaction between I and concentrated HBr leads to the formation of acidic methylviologen bromobismuthate-bromide [H<subscript>3</subscript>O]<subscript>2</subscript>[MV][BiBr<subscript>6</subscript>]Br · 4H<subscript>2</subscript>O (II) and a minor impurity of bromobismuthate tribromide [MV]<subscript>3</subscript>[Bi<subscript>2</subscript>Br<subscript>9</subscript>][Br<subscript>3</subscript>]<subscript>3</subscript> (III). The acidic bromobismuthate of ethylviologen (EtV<superscript>2+</superscript>) [H<subscript>3</subscript>O][EtV][BiBr<subscript>6</subscript>] · 1.34H<subscript>2</subscript>O (IV) formed under similar conditions has another composition. Thermal decomposition of II yields single-phase [MV][BiBr<subscript>5</subscript>], which has a low optical band gap. The electrochemical characteristics of I and related iodobismuthate [MV]<subscript>3</subscript>[Bi<subscript>2</subscript>I<subscript>11</subscript>]I have been compared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
