Abstract

This paper focuses on the year 1948, a year of great significance marked by a number of changes pertaining to the status of the Greek Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia. The paper aims to introduce and describe the measures used by the Communist Party with the purpose to subordinate the individual institutions within the Catholic Church that was at first perceived as a potential ally of the newly established regime. When the initial plan had not worked out, the Communist administration decided to adopt several laws, governmental regulations and norms intended to curtail the position of the Greek Catholic Church and its links to the Vatican. The paper examines selected facts and phenomena of the said historical period that can serve as a lesson from which we can learn so that we do not fall prey to any other modern system that might endanger our current society.
