Abstract

March 2021 marks the 75th anniversary of the Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE), a society that remains vibrant, with an expanding international membership. I hope to highlight how the leaders of the SSE - the elected Council and committee members - have put in place several successful initiatives that have energized and diversified the membership, supported early-career researchers, and strengthened the role of the SSE in public understanding of evolution. When the SSE was formed in 1946, the Council differed from its current makeup, consisting of the President (see Table 1 for a list of the SSE Presidents), three Vice Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, and six Councilors. The SSE Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC), established in 2014 (with a full GSAC beginning in 2016), has two votes on the Council, and as mentioned in the Handbook, is " I charged with representing the interests of SSE's graduate student membership to the SSE Council and vice versa i .".
