Abstract

This research examines the nature of dynamic capabilities and the organizational conditions that enhance the dynamic capabilities of the organization. The analysis is carried out by using cybernetics theory and specifically the viable system model. It highlights the critical role played in the creation and maintenance of dynamic capabilities by three constructs at the organization level—organizational identity, organizational mindfulness, and organizational fragmentation. The research uses the concept of embedded case studies and focuses on three airlines in the Indian civil aviation sector from 2007 to 2017, a period that was highly competitive and turbulent for the domestic aviation sector, with the three airlines showing markedly differing growth trajectories through this period.
