The abstract on the topic "Global Atrophy of the Trigeminal Nerve in Trigeminal Neuralgia" reads that trigeminal neuralgia is characterised by paroxysmal facial pain confined to one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. The aetiology is believed to be neurovascular compression, however, anatomical factors such as global atrophy of the trigeminal nerve have been reported in up to 42 percent of patients.
