Abstract

The article focuses on the financial crisis in Detroit. Shutdown of the Ford Motor Company, which put 50,000 people out of work; Assertion that lack of material from the Kelsey-Hayes wheel plant in Detroit forced to close the Ford plants; Background of the Kelsey-Hayes strike; Intention of the United Automobile Workers officials to ask the National Labor Relations Board to take a strike vote among the employees of the automobile industry's Big Three, General Motors, Chrysler and Ford; Demand of the Union for a wage increase of 30 percent; View that a strike mandate is a powerful weapon in any wage negotiation; Information that the unions are maintaining that industry can raise wage rates without increasing prices; Question concerning of sharing of industry profits.
