Abstract

The study deals with the problems of teaching business English for the students who major in world economy and are supposed to work in various spheres using professional discourse in future. As business context has become extremely multicultural and diverse, created sample business situations in the majority of student’s books are considered not sufficient to keep up with real communication at workplaces and supplementary materials are necessary. The author supports the idea that research of definite discourse structures and patterns taken from real life should be made based on the needs of particular groups of learners and after that the conclusions along with existing models of communicative situations should be introduced, explained and practiced in class, as only real fragments of discourse imply intertextuality which means having basic knowledge, understanding the context and the model of communication. The method of discourse-analysis, the method of contextual analysis are used in the research as the work studies the genre of interviewing officials about vital economic issues in newspapers, on official governmental and business web-sites and in famous British and American TV-shows in 2017 and 2018, reveals the difference in using language means and speaking strategies of interviewers based on the discourse genre and its pragmatic function. While aggressive and rude behaviour of a TV host is acceptable, interviewers for other types of official media prefer classic metaphors and words that are not stylistically coloured and a different choice of language units can be criticized by their interlocutors. The article also advises to vary communicative situations in class in order to practice different genres of discourse with the students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
