How 1.4 million people have been forced from their homes as a result of violence and the ensuing hunger and disease; Declaration by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell that the Janjaweed and the Sudanese government should be held accountable for the genocide; Pledge of the U.S. to deploy several thousand African observers to monitor the violence; Failure of the administration of President George W. Bush to persuade the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on Khartoum; Lack of assistance from the international community against the Sudanese government; Findings of the UN that only half of Darfurians have sufficient food and health care.
