Abstract

The article presents information on cortisone, one of the two new "miracle hormones," that have turned the medical world upside down in the past 30 months. Several of these have to do with new sources for cortisone. At present it is manufactured from ox or sheep bile by a process that is extremely complicated and expensive. The total available supplies of, raw material are so small that there is at present no possibility of meeting the, pressing, worldwide needs for "the hormone, either for therapy or for continued research. Almost simultaneously, news has come that the synthesis has been accomplished from a number of new sources, most of them abundant in nature.
