Abstract

The reaction between MnCl<subscript>2</subscript>·4H<subscript>2</subscript>O, 2,2′-bis-p-<superscript>t</superscript>Bu-calix[4]arene (H<subscript>8</subscript>L1) and 2-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine (hmpH) in a basic dmf/MeOH solution results in the formation of the complex [Mn <superscript>III</superscript><subscript>10</subscript> Mn <superscript>II</superscript><subscript>4</subscript> (L1)<subscript>3</subscript>(hmp)<subscript>4</subscript>(μ<subscript>3</subscript>-O)<subscript>4</subscript>(μ<subscript>3</subscript>-OH)<subscript>2</subscript>(MeOH)<subscript>4</subscript>(dmf)<subscript>6</subscript>](dmf)<subscript>4</subscript> (6) upon vapour diffusion of petroleum ether into the mother liquor. The crystals are in the monoclinic space group C2/c, with the asymmetric unit (ASU) comprising one half of the molecule. The structure describes a large S-shaped cluster (∼40 Å top to tail) where the unusual syn and anti conformations of the calixarene ligands results in two binding pockets each containing a [Mn <superscript>III</superscript><subscript>5</subscript> Mn <superscript>II</superscript><subscript>2</subscript> ] moiety comprised of two perpendicular, vertex-sharing [Mn<subscript>4</subscript>] butterflies. One butterfly possesses a [Mn <superscript>III</superscript><subscript>4</subscript> O<subscript>4</subscript>] core and the second a [Mn <superscript>III</superscript><subscript>2</subscript> Mn <superscript>II</superscript><subscript>2</subscript> O<subscript>3</subscript>] unit with the Mn<superscript>II</superscript> ions in the central body positions. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements reveal weak exchange interactions between the metal centres. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
