Abstract

This article presents information on the significance of windows in an architectural design. Store windows are shallow, unreal rooms inhabited by petulant mannequins. But show-window display is much, much more than interior design for dummies. For more than a century, it has been a major cultural force that shaped people's experience in the modern city. And today, even though imaginatively designed windows play only a small role in a world of big-box stores, shopping malls, and global chains, window designers continue to provide unexpected angles, provocative views, ambiguous tableaux, and fresh attitudes that draw passersby into their stores, and more important, into the spectacle of the moment. Store windows are in one sense interiors, simply because they are within the envelope of the building.
