Abstract

There are many connections between science and art, and one of the easiest to investigate-in school or at home-has to do with color. Because the molecules that make up those different colors have different sizes, and the smaller particles are able to move through the water faster than the larger particles. Now that you know that, let's look at the colors on one of the paper strips (see Figure 5) and see if you can determine which colors are made of smaller molecules, and which colors are made of bigger molecules. You can even make it more than one color by carefully pulling the stem apart at the bottom, and putting each part of the stem in a separate cup of water with a different color dye in each cup (see Figure 7).
