Abstract

The concepts of system reliability, generally defined as the ability of a computer system to meet its interface specifications within a specified time limit, predate not only that of distributed computing but also that of the electronic computer itself. With the advent of the electronic computer, reliability and availability gained recognition as disciplines of intellectual challenge. The development of reliability techiques can be linked to computer hardware developments. Interest in distributed software and database systems has grown substantially.
