Abstract
- Complementary sources for the understanding of Neapolitan social history: the arts and crafts mentioned in a collection of Neapolitan funeral posters. This paper presents a subset of approximately 300 funeral posters, taken from a collection of some 1300 such items photographed in Naples and its Province, and giving the deceased person's nickname indicating his or her art or craft. After pointing out how the use of dialect in naming the art or craft sets the intended public of these posters apart from the general population of Naples, the paper goes on to list the posters by category, commenting on each one. There are six in all professionals, employed workers, self-employed workers, street vendors, domestic workers, women workers, practitioners of obsolete crafts. In concluding, the paper points out a peculiarity of these nicknames and associated crafts: they are a sign of Neapolitan resistence to modernization, also seen in the persistence up to the present of an "alleyway economy". An appendix gives the complete list of nicknames studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
