Abstract

Biomembranes have been applied recently in periodontal treatment in order to achieve the periodontal tissue regeneration. These membranes play a key role in guiding the migration of progenitor cells and stem cells within the periodontal tissues to the area of defects for tissue healing and regeneration. Bovine pericardium is mainly composed of collagen type I, which was demonstrated to have mechanical properties and biological regenerative potential. Our research aims to extend the applications of biomembrane derived from bovine pericardium to periodontal treatment. Bovine pericardium was harvested and processed to achieve suitable mechanical and biological properties for periodontal treatment. Graft safety of the fabricated membrane was evaluated in vitro and in vivo according to ISO and FDA standards. Especially, the biomembrane was shown to support the migration of human gingival fibroblasts in vitro. These results indicate that biomembranes fabicated from bovine pericardium is suitable for periodontal treatment and regeneration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
