Abstract

Controlled generation of homoleptic versus heteroleptic Au <superscript>I</superscript><subscript>2</subscript> M (M = Ni<superscript>II</superscript>, Zn<superscript>II</superscript>) trinuclear complexes, which is achieved by a slight change in the diphosphine P^P linker of digold(I) metalloligands, [Au<subscript>2</subscript>(P^P)(D -pen)<subscript>2</subscript>]<superscript>2−</superscript> (L1<superscript>P^P</superscript>; D -pen = D -penicillaminate) and [Au<subscript>2</subscript>(P^P)(L -cys)<subscript>2</subscript>]<superscript>2−</superscript> (L2<superscript>P^P</superscript>; L -cys = L -cysteinate), is reported. The reactions of a 1 : 1 mixture of L1<superscript>dppm</superscript> and L2<superscript>dppm</superscript> (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) with M = Ni<superscript>II</superscript>, Zn<superscript>II</superscript> gave the homoleptic Au <superscript>I</superscript><subscript>2</subscript> M complexes, [M(L1<superscript>dppm</superscript>)] and [M(L2<superscript>dppm</superscript>)], which co-crystallized to form [M(L1<superscript>dppm</superscript>)]·[M(L2<superscript>dppm</superscript>)] (1<subscript>M</subscript>). Similar reactions using L1<superscript>dppe</superscript> and L2<superscript>dppe</superscript> (dppe = bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane), instead of L1<superscript>dppm</superscript> and L2<superscript>dppm</superscript>, led to the selective production and crystallization of the heteroleptic Au <superscript>I</superscript><subscript>2</subscript> M complex, [M(L3<superscript>dppe</superscript>)] (2<subscript>M</subscript>; L3<superscript>dppe</superscript> = [Au<subscript>2</subscript>(dppe)(L -cys)(D -pen)]<superscript>2−</superscript>), accompanied by the scrambling of L1<superscript>dppe</superscript> and L2<superscript>dppe</superscript>. The homoleptic 1<subscript>M</subscript> and the heteroleptic 2<subscript>M</subscript> showed different absorption (green versus blue) and emission (yellow versus orange) colours for M = Ni<superscript>II</superscript> and Zn<superscript>II</superscript>, respectively.
