Abstract

The article presents information on the effects of allergen exposure-avoidance on inflammation in asthmatic children. Allergen exposure-avoidance is associated with changes in serums and nasal-specific IgE, allergen-induced histamine release from basophils as well as with changes in eosinophil percent count in the sputum and in serum markers of eosinophil activation. Allergen avoidance is associated with a decrease, not only in BHR but also in specific bronchial hyper-responsiveness, after a long period of allergen avoidance, asthmatic children undergoing specific bronchial challenge, develop fewer late reactions and the enhancement of BHR by late reaction to allergen is far less marked.
