Abstract

It was a real privilege when approached by the I British Journal of Industrial Relations i to review Andrew Brady's critical new study of the shifting sands of trade union-Labour Party relations over the past 50 years or so. These were lessons well learnt by the Labour leaderships during periods of major economic and social change, and the corresponding inability of the Labour movement to see off the right-wing laissez faire Tory Governments until the 1997 General Election. At this point, I hope the new Labour Prime Minister, Chancellor and other senior members of the Cabinet read the Brady analysis and will along with the trade union leaders, whether affiliated to the Labour Party or not, carefully consider those historic lessons.
