Abstract

The article presents political updates of the U.S., as of November 23, 1865. At the meeting held at the Cooper Union, last week, to provide for the relief of Southern destitution, politician Henry Ward Beecher reiterated his demand for more faith in Southern men, while declaring that the freedmen, as the wards of the nation, must be protected by guarantees. Now, it is mainly with regard to the Negroes that the good faith. According to another update, the Mississippi Legislature has revised its refusal to allow Negro testimony to be received against Whites. It now proposes to admit it in all civil cases in which Negroes are parties, and in criminal cases only the testimony of the persons against whose persons or property the offences have been committed; but no Negro, it is provided, shall be examined in any case except upon the stand and in open court.
