Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine whether, in a period when there is much concern about Great Britain's failure to adapt to a changing economic and technological environment, it is not precisely the established system of government which is most resistant to change and to the changes needed. The author describes the British political system as being "confrontational" and "evasive". Confrontational because the concept of two sides is deeply embedded into our society and, indeed, into our inherited culture. Confrontational because it is the duty of the Opposition to oppose. Virtually every political statement, however trivial, is immediately contradicted.
