Abstract

The article focuses on food security in Europe and other parts of the world. Food security provides the broader context for food safety. Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. The definition of food security, adopted by the 1996 World Food Summit, encompasses two related aspects: food supply security and food safety. Food supply security and food safety are closely related. Recent worldwide trends in the food system are largely responsible for the growing recognition of the importance of food safety and its rapprochement with food supply security.
