Abstract
- This paper considers the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network and evaluates the burst-based allocation of the virtual channel (VC) bandwidth. In the traditional call-based bandwidth allocation by statistical multiplexing based on the bursty property of the traffic, the cell loss is inevitable due to the short-term traffic congestion. This paper also considers the data terminal where the transmission rate can be adjusted through the negotiation with the network and evaluates the burst-based bandwidth allocation mechanism. It is assumed in the proposed method that the virtual path (VP) is already divided into a number of channels and the channel is allocated for each burst. The data transfer by such a bandwidth-reservation method is evaluated quantitatively by an analytical approach, and an adequate division into VP channels is indicated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
