The article discusses the book "The Papers and Biography of Lion Gardiner, 1599-1663," with an Appendix, edited, with notes critical and illustrative, by Curtiss C. Gardiner. The book points out a defect which gentlemen of leisure are apt to overlook-namely, that a useless book is worse than nothing. In the present case, out of the hundred pages of the book, only two have any value - namely, those which give a list of the proprietors of Gardiner's Island and the pedigree of the author's own line. The theme is an interesting one and in the hands of a local antiquary, it would doubtless have been productive.
