Abstract

Objective To explore the effect of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) health-preserving breathing exercises on lung function and quality of life in young patients with restrictive ventilatory impairment. Methods Totally 50 young patients with restrictive ventilatory impairment were selected as the research objects. All patients received health-preserving breathing exercises and video-assisted feedback teaching. The pulmonary function and quality of life were evaluated and compared before and 6 months after intervention. Results The forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second/predicted value ratio (FEVt % pred) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) of patients after 6 months of intervention were higher than those before intervention (P <0.05). Patients achieved lower factor scores (symptom, activity and impact subsets ) of St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) after 6 months of intervention (P < 0. 05). Conclusion The TCM health-preserving breathing exercises can effectively improve the lung function and quality of life of young patients with restrictive ventilatory impairment.
