Abstract

His single crystals of bismuth were exceptionally pure and Shubnikov refined the crystal growth methods, trying numerous different approaches and checking reproducibility, ultimately producing samples with unprecedentedly low defect density. The Shubnikov-de Haas paper was published in I Nature i in 1930, although a longer follow-up paper appeared later in I Physikalische Zeitschrift der Sowjetunion i , a practice Shubnikov repeated a number of times in his career. Back in the Soviet Union, Shubnikov established the Soviet Union's first cryogenic laboratory. [Extracted from the article]
