Abstract

The article discusses some of the political updates related to the U.S. The best thing that the Fifty-sixth U.S. Congress did was to enact the Gold Standard Act, which marks the longest step yet taken toward the permanent establishment of a sound financial system. The next best thing was the failure to pass the impudent Shipping-Subsidy Bill. The bargain has been carried through; there is perfect frankness about the means by which Democratic opposition in the U.S. Senate to the Administration's policy in Cuba and the Philippines was overcome. There has been same sharp comment in the War Department and in the service newspapers upon the looseness and carelessness or the language of the law for the increase of the army, which was signed on February 2.
