Abstract

The article presents information on several books and other developments related to music. The books considered here are, "The Story of the Hymns and Tunes," by Theron Brown and Hezekiah Butterworth, "University Hymns," and "A History of the Choir and Music of Trinity Church," by A.H. Messiter. The book by Butterworth and Brown, notices as many as possible of the standard pieces of hymns with a few others that seem to introduce new strain. The "University Hymns" are presented with the actual tunes arranged for men's voices. This volume illustrates the advantage of having at a university a musical department with eminent experts. The production of composer Daniel Auber's "Fra Diavolo" at the Manhattan Opera House is an event of more than usual importance. If the opera proves a success, it may lead to a general revival of a kind of stage music which, once very popular, has in the last two decades been unduly neglected.
