Abstract

All art is imitation. The average American play, for instance, is art because it imitates some other play that has made a hit. Foreigners say that the United States is prejudiced against what is traditional and what is old. But however true this may be of the political methods, the social standards, and certain phases of the business morality, the charges will not hold against the native drama. Effete, immobile, drowsy Europe sends theatrical sensations from season to season. Pushing, adventurous, novelty-loving America goes on weaving plots after the manner of grandfathers.
