Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the characteristics of a Muslim Malay woman as portrayed in the novel titled ‘Diary of a Nurse’ by Aminah Mokhtar from the perspective of Feminism Talbiah. The concept of Feminism Talbiah integrates Elaine Showalter’s notion of Feminism and Yusuf al-Qardhawi’s thoughts of Muslim women. Talbiah means a total surrender to Allah SWT. Tauhid is an essential element of a Muslim Malay woman who engages in total surrender to Allah SWT in terms of her personality, psychology, spiritual and other aspects of life. Textual analysis of the novel reveals that the main character, who is a Muslim Malay woman named Siti Munirah, holds the concept of talbiah as reflected in her obedience to Allah SWT. This paper concludes the character of Siti Munirah is developed based on the element of tauhid, which is the element neglected in the western feminism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
